1958, April.  The Los Angeles Dodgers arrive at the Coliseum for their first game in LA.  Thanks to Lynn Thompson @ Southern California Nostalgia.  The 1958 Dodger roster was impressive.  Opening Day in 1958 was on April 15, and the Dodgers started the season against the Giants.  The line-up for that ballgame is here.  Giants destroyed the Dodgers in the opener, 8-0.

1958, Los Angeles Coliseum, Los Angeles, CA, April 18, 1958 - A view from the Dodgers bullpen of the 78,000 baseball-hungry Californians that are in attendance to see the Dodgers' first game in Los Angeles.

Their opponent this day was the San Francisco Giants, who, just like the Dodgers, moved out to the West Coast from New York City at the conclusion of the 1957 season.

As for the highly anticipated match-up, thanks to Dick Gray's seventh-inning solo blast and an error by Giants catcher Bob Schmidt that led to a three-run 5th inning, the Dodgers won 6-5.

Despite a shaky outing on the mound, Dodgers starter Carl Erskine (8 IPs, 10 H, 4 BB, 4 ER, 2 HRs) would get the win, and reliever Clem Labine would come out of the bullpen in the ninth for the save.

Both home runs given up by Erskine came off the bat of the Giants outfielder Hank Sauer.  Thanks to Ron A. Bolton @ Old-Time Baseball Photos.
